My darling,
Received your welcome letter today. It was especially welcome since we were weathered out again and forced to spend another dull weekend in Montgomery. We’ll try again next week weather permitting.
That was nice of the Spenceis entertaining you all for dinner. Maybe I can find something here for them as a little gift.
Sounds like the Blackburns are trying to go big time. Personally that much privacy doesn’t interest me. I like friends fairly close at hand.
You can depend on Shonny to make a haul whenever she gets a chance. What a monkey.
Now you just relax about this war business. Its not going to happen just yet. The next 30 days, I think, will determine the future. As expect Russia will play the deciding part and she’d too busy with her satellites right now to act in the Suez. 30 days may bring a different picture. There’s no danger that I’ll have to go anywhere. If it ever starts all out 30-45 days will see it decided one way or the other. There’ll be no 2 year buildup in this one. We either win in a month or lose it. Its that critical – So not many people will go anywhere except SAC and those already in position. Please, honey don’t get all excited over it.
Don’t worry about me for Xmas. I need a new trench coat and you can give me that out of our travel pay. That’s all I need, materially that is.
Now – there are just 2 weeks left before I get home. I want you to promise me you’ll start going to bed early. Honey, you can’t take care of 3 kids, a house and do anything else alone on four or five hours sleep. I want you in bed at 10:30 pm and asleep – I don’t want to see any red eyes when get home. Also take care of yourself – your period is either here or due and I don’t want anymore fainting spells either. Please, honey, for me – get some sleep.
Two more weeks and you can sleep in my arms where you belong but in the meantime just think I’m there holding you and loving you. You must relax darling just a little while longer. I’m like a hen on a hot griddle myself trying to push the calendar forward but it just won’t move any faster. This place is beginning to get on everyone’s nerves a little. There’s no letup in the course – constant pressure all the time and the pace is a fast one. Fortunately we have a wonderful bunch of guys so we’re all getting along fine but the pace is beginning to tell.
Each day there’s one or two hangovers on guys who hardly drank a drop when we first came here. You don’t have to say anything about this – there’s no sense any of the wives thinking their husbands are drinking too heavy. Actually neither Cass or Meil or I have gone too far yet. Another week and it may be a different story. A guy can only stand pressure and lonesomeness just so long then one drink will lead to another! God – what I wouldn’t give to put my arms around you and squeeze you. I feel like I’m living in a vacuum. Its just plain unreal.
The news says you had a blizzard – please be careful driving – I want you all in one big healthy, lovable piece when I get there.
Yes, Holman is here and we knew all about it. Haven’t seen his mistress but understand she’s quite a looker. No, baby, I’m not interested in here or anyone else – Just you.
Take care of yourself, honey, get some sleep. Daddy will be home soon.
All my love,
Hubby
