7 Nov 1956

Tuesday

My darling,

Nine more days and we’ll be out of this joint heading west. Talk about counting the days – we really are. You just keep them eyes peeled Sunday nite, baby, anytime after 7pm. We won’t be much later unless its bad weather. Keep that front door unlocked – I’m liable to take it off the hinges when I arrive.

Looks like you’ve been having a time, what with flooding the kitchen, snow storms, etc. You be real careful in bad weather now – I don’t want you hurt. Like I told you the other night I didn’t marry an old bag and I don’t want to hear that anymore. You’re my wife and I’m damn proud to say so. I think you’re lovely.

I’ll cash the $25 check tomorrow and that will suffice until I come home. Also will have to cash the bond to pay BOQ and laundry fees.

No, I’m not looking for any new models when you’re old and gray. Where could I find one that would look after me like you do? I prefer the older type models – they are much more serviceable. Tell you what I’ll do – if you’ll snuggle up bare-naked every nite, I’ll get rid of the stubble before bedtime – is it a bargain.

I just found out that Thanksgiving is the 22nd – sounds like a nice day you have planned.
You check on the chairs – I’ll leave it up to you.

Frankly, am quite worried over this Suez crisis now that Russia is making noises. Not that I expect to go anywhere but it could develop fast into a real serious situation.

Am maintaining an A average and it’s a strain believe me.

Going to close now and watch the election results and news on TV. News is scarce here.

Miss you, dream about you, and long for you more each day.

I love you
Hubby

8 June 1945

3149 Newark Street, NW
Washington 8, DC
June 8, 1945

Dear Nannie,

Your beautiful watch came today and I am just overcome! It’s almost too good! I really love it, Nannie. I don’t know how to tell you. It’s just perfect! Bill Stringer heard of the make when he was abroad and he said it was a very good make. I don’t keep up with swiss makes, but I sure can believe that. I can hardly wait to wear it to school Monday. Lots of the girls already have their watches and they’ll love mine, as I do.

The ham is wonderful. How can you be so good to us? The outside of it tasted just like smoked ham and the inside tastes like fresh pork now. All of it is swell. The eggs are good, too. I hardly ever eat eggs for breakfast, but I’m cook for Daddy’s breakfast this week.

I’ve been in the air 1½ hours now and its about the biggest thrill I’ve ever head! Flying is simply wonderful. My aviation teacher is a wonderful pilot and very progressive.

She wants to see aviation advance by leaps and bounds after the war and I think she will. I want to learn to fly this summer.

I had my calling cards engraved, but they haven’t arrived yet. I’ll send you a graduation announcement when they come. Graduating is fun and my new watch is super!

Love,
Sibyl

5 Nov 1956

Sadly, my scanner decided to join its friends in the big electronics store in the sky.  I'm working on getting a new one, and in the mean time I've fallen behind on posting!  Soon.... I hope... Lori

Saturday nite, 3 Nov

My darling,

Received your welcome letter today. It was especially welcome since we were weathered out again and forced to spend another dull weekend in Montgomery. We’ll try again next week weather permitting.

That was nice of the Spenceis entertaining you all for dinner. Maybe I can find something here for them as a little gift.

Sounds like the Blackburns are trying to go big time. Personally that much privacy doesn’t interest me. I like friends fairly close at hand.

You can depend on Shonny to make a haul whenever she gets a chance. What a monkey.

Now you just relax about this war business. Its not going to happen just yet. The next 30 days, I think, will determine the future. As expect Russia will play the deciding part and she’d too busy with her satellites right now to act in the Suez. 30 days may bring a different picture. There’s no danger that I’ll have to go anywhere. If it ever starts all out 30-45 days will see it decided one way or the other. There’ll be no 2 year buildup in this one. We either win in a month or lose it. Its that critical – So not many people will go anywhere except SAC and those already in position. Please, honey don’t get all excited over it.

Don’t worry about me for Xmas. I need a new trench coat and you can give me that out of our travel pay. That’s all I need, materially that is.

Now – there are just 2 weeks left before I get home. I want you to promise me you’ll start going to bed early. Honey, you can’t take care of 3 kids, a house and do anything else alone on four or five hours sleep. I want you in bed at 10:30 pm and asleep – I don’t want to see any red eyes when get home. Also take care of yourself – your period is either here or due and I don’t want anymore fainting spells either. Please, honey, for me – get some sleep.

Two more weeks and you can sleep in my arms where you belong but in the meantime just think I’m there holding you and loving you. You must relax darling just a little while longer. I’m like a hen on a hot griddle myself trying to push the calendar forward but it just won’t move any faster. This place is beginning to get on everyone’s nerves a little. There’s no letup in the course – constant pressure all the time and the pace is a fast one. Fortunately we have a wonderful bunch of guys so we’re all getting along fine but the pace is beginning to tell.

Each day there’s one or two hangovers on guys who hardly drank a drop when we first came here. You don’t have to say anything about this – there’s no sense any of the wives thinking their husbands are drinking too heavy. Actually neither Cass or Meil or I have gone too far yet. Another week and it may be a different story. A guy can only stand pressure and lonesomeness just so long then one drink will lead to another! God – what I wouldn’t give to put my arms around you and squeeze you. I feel like I’m living in a vacuum. Its just plain unreal.

The news says you had a blizzard – please be careful driving – I want you all in one big healthy, lovable piece when I get there.

Yes, Holman is here and we knew all about it. Haven’t seen his mistress but understand she’s quite a looker. No, baby, I’m not interested in here or anyone else – Just you.

Take care of yourself, honey, get some sleep. Daddy will be home soon.

All my love,
Hubby

13 Aug 1945

***Wow!  Fully typed, this letter tops out at 4 1/2 pages!  As she got older, her letters got longer and longer!  Enjoy.... Lori

August 13, 1945

Hello,

Well, you all will have to make the best of this, because I guess this will be about the last long letter you’ll receive from me. I’ve accumulated letters till I have eight from the family, so decided to write. In case you’re wondering, two are from mom, one from pop, and five from Audrey. I think I answered Nannie’s in one of my other letters, cause her’s isn’t here, but this is to her and all of you-all.

I’m telling you, they really believe in working us there at the office. We never have any time to horse around and we never did anything but, last year. I’ll be glad of a rest when I get to Maine, so don’t plan a lot of things to do. One thing I want most of all is to be able to sleep as long as I want to in the morning.

You asked what I wanted to have for dinner the day I get there… shall I dream up a meal? I did this morning before the boss got there and had them all drooling. I told them about mom’s angel pie as well as I could remember and they want the recipe. Everyone has a recipe of the rolls. When I brought some over to Louie’s house by way of the office, I gave them all a roll or half of one and they loved them! Anyway…. Fried chicken would be good to start with, mashed potatoes, peas, or creamed string beans, or coliflower (or is it cauliflower?) for a vegetable, milk, rolls (any kind if they’re home-made) Nannie’s apple pie and Mom’s French vanilla ice cream. Well, I can dream, can’t I? I’m so sick of my own meals, that I could eat any old kind of slop, as long as I didn’t have to cook them. I discovered anyother drug store around the corner from the Governor Shepherd and they have real good hot dinners, so I get a good dinner every noontime. Then I only have a sandwich at night. That’s so much simpler. Also, since the secretary left, there’s a real cute girl around 26 who’s married and lonts of fun whom I eat with, so I don’t eat all by myself and not eat much. We both have good meals.

Let’s see, what else do you all worry about? My love life, I guess. Well, rest your weary minds about that. It’s all shot. I see Louie once in a dog’s age and Herb about the same and Roger about the same. Louie hasn’t called me since I told him I already had a date and couldn’t come down to his cottage with him the week-end before last. I had a date Sat (4th) nite with Herb and Sunday (5th) all day with Roger. We got in around 6:00, Roger stayed to dinner and Herb came around 6:00 (I’d already invited him to dinner) so we had a rare old time. Roger left around 7:30 and Herb and I went hunting a Watergate Concert, but they didn’t have any that night, so he brought me home and left around 10. Last Sat. night I was supposed to have a date with Herb, but I went to the beach with Roger in the afternoon and he lost his way home cause he’d only been on the road once before in the daytime, so we didn’t get home till 11 and that was too late to ask Herb over. I called him and he was mad as heck. Tough. He came over for breakfast Sun. morning and we went to fifth church. We saw Mary Jane and Bill there. I took him all over sight-seeing yesterday afternoon. I haven’t been inside the Capital Building since heck was a pup. More fun! He wanted to walk over and see the Jefferson Memorial, but I told him to be satisfied with the Lincoln Memorial this time. It was late and Jeff. Is too far away. Wish we’d had a car. I guess I’m not a very good guide for Wash. And suberbs. He left early, too, so I was in bed by 11 last night. I’m a good little girl.

Nancy and Ralph found a car and picked it up Friday night. I went with them to get it. It’s a 39 olds. Pretty good. I think she’s going to have a baby, but she hasn’t told me yet, so I guess I’ll wait till she does to congratulate her. I could be wrong, but I doubt it! They are leaving the 18th or the 19th, and Betty and John found an apartment in Alex… the Park Farifax, so they’ll be leaving around the 15ht or 18th (they don’t know when, really) and I’ll be all alone and an orphan again!

Don’t worry about it, though. I can take care of myself and Mr. Wardlow. I won’t have any boys in when they leave. I seldom do now, anyway. I had Roger to dinner one day last week, but we left for the movies right afterwards, and I won’t have anyone to dinner after they leave except maybe Mary, Jane and Bill. The laundry came today and I left the check. Nothing’s been lost so far. I can take care of it.

I haven’t heard anything from Maryland U yet. I guess I won’t for a while, but I wish they’d hurry up and ask for the $15 while I still have it. Roger’s going to Maryland, did I tell you? He’s planning to go for 3 or 6 months, (I’ve forgotten which he said) and take engineering and then go to MIT.

Dick Hinson was home for a while, I heard. Daddy saw him, I didn’t. I guess he came home for his sister’s wedding. We owe her a wedding gift, by the way. They sent us a very nice invitation, and I meant to go, but didn’t get to it.

I’m sorry I haven’t written lately, but I haven’t had the time, energy or ambition. All I do all day long is type up letters for overseas with 14 carbons, or type reports for the boss which have to be letter-perfect, with pages and pages of figures. By the time 5:30 comes, I’m all beat, and I’m not kidding. I’m not going to look like any picture of health like you said I did last year. And it’s not staying up late that did it, either, it’s those reports and just the steady hard work all day long. I’m not complaining. I like my work a lot, but I hate the thought of a typewriter when I come home. I haven’t written a letter in two weeks, except for this, and that’s no stuff! I’m not going to, either. I’ll bring all my letters to Maine and try to answer them there in longhand.

I think I’ll work all day Friday, the 24th, (the day I leave) cause I want to get paid. I’ve already put $30 in the bank and I’m going to pu t$20 more when I can catch it open. I’ve got to save the rest, though, cause I’m afraid I might not have enough to pay for my train fare. Daddy said it might cost $28, so I’ve got to save it up. I’ve been paid two $70 checks and a $30 check. When mom said I ought to write down where I spent every penny, I almost split my sides! Sure, Nick, I’ve got all kinds of time to write down where every penny goes! (Now you hold the lantern and I’ll shovel!) I’ll keep a budget of my accounts every night instead of writing to you-all, OK? Like heck. I can account for most of it, but as for my spending money, if I can’t have some of my own money to spend like I want, it’s too bad, cause I’m not going to keep a budget this summer. I spend about .60¢ for lunch on the average and $1.25 for a pass every week. Daddy says I don’t get a clothes allowance this summer, so I spend my own money for clothes. The other day I got three pairs of silk panties with rubber in them @ 80¢ a pair, which is high, I realize, but they’re good pants, and rubber is rubber. Anyway, I haven’t got time, space, or patience to enumerate on all the stuff I bought and how much I paid for it, so I’ll tell you when I get there.

Herb’s a good kid, if you like kids. He hasn’t grown up yet, though. Even if he is 20! He wanted to give me his silver identification bracelet which is worth between 8 and 12 dollars, and he wanted me to wear his high school class ring, which is heavy gold and a size 9 (which is about ¼ inch bigger than my thumb. I’d have worn it better on my big toe!). He said he could tape it up to fit me. The ID bracelet was so big I could slide it on my wrist without using the clasp. It’s kind of tight on him. He really is a big-boned farmer from the country! He’s awfully nice, though, and kind of bashful (of all things!), so I told him as nicely as I could that boys just don’t go around giving their nice rings and bracelets to just any girl they happen to meet and like. I think he was kind of hurt that I wouldn’t wear them, but I told him they were too expensive. I’m not going to write him for a while. He’s getting too serious. He needs his mother just a little while longer. Some girl is going to play him for a sucker someday if he doesn’t watch out and someone’s going to be terribly hurt. That’s his worry, though, not mine. He’s still a nice guy.

Well, it hasn’t rained now for three days straight now! I can hardly believe it! It’s 85ยบ out now and humidity is 93%! (The time is 9:00pm. Wish I were in Maine where it gets cold at night! This is really the first rather hot night we’ve had for quite a while. This summer’s been nice and cool most of the time. If it didn’t rain so much, it’d be nice.)

I was awfully disappointed about the flying and I never got around to telling you about it. I supposed Daddy had. I’m going to resume my lessons the minute we get back, however, so never fear!

I’m sending 40 name tags. Not that you’ll need that many, but I’ll probably want some to use when I get up there, too. I need a lot of white cotton socks for this fall, and I haven’t had time to shop down town at all and probably won’t. I’m too tired when I get out at night and I hate to take time off from work. I may do it sometime when I work overtime. I hear that you can’t get paid for over-time work. You just get compensatory time off. You see, pop, these reports that I’m doing just have to be out by Wed. (each Wed.) at the meeting 10:30 AM, so I have to work over-time either Monday or Tuesday to get it done. We haven’t got a secretary now and won’t get one before I leave. I’m doing double duty now and it’s no easy job.

Mr. Stanford never phoned about Audrey’s room. He couldn’t have it now, anyway. Betty asked her little cousin (little, I say, she’s 22 and real cute) down from Connecticut for about 4 days.

I don’t go over to the pool much. In fact, I haven’t been since the week you left. I don’t like to swim by myself and there’s no one there I know very well or care much about. It’s been too cold to swim most of the time, anyway, and I’ve been too tired to change and go over to get wet the rest of the time. I sound like an old lady, don’t I? I probably look like one, too. I never look in the mirror anymore…. Too scared of the consequences! My nose peeled last week after I’d gone to the beach with Roger!

Nope, I’m not robbing the cradle in going out with Roger once in a while. We had a long talk the other night about college. He hadn’t even gotten a catalogue of Maryland U., so I loaned him mine and told him all about it as much as I knew. He’s pretty smart and older (a little older, anyway) than his years. He’ll be 17 the 19th of this month! I think that’s funny as heck! I didn’t know his father was dead till last week. Why didn’t you tell me, Audrey? I almost collapsed! He bought another car, by the way. This time a ’38 Chevy Coupe. Something went wrong with his other car, so he sold it.

I got a nice letter from Eddie at Sampson last week. He sure is mad about Beverley. I’ll have to look her over and see if I approve. Don’t worry, Audrey, I did tell him that I’d get along without him on my list, cause I still had Willie, and Louie, John, Jack, Buddy, Herb, and a few others. I put it a little nicer than that, though, but nearly as sarcastically as he did when he said I might still have a chance! He’s a character. I hope Subby’s still there when I come up. Will he be?

That’s enough about boys. On to a more pleasant subject. Isn’t the end of the war soon to come wonderful? Passing the White House yesterday we saw all the mob of people waiting for the news that the end had come. They had a little truck with a broadcasting station hooked up to give the news. It was pretty good!

Nope, Mr. Wardlow hasn’t taken me to a big league game yet… Darn!

I’ll try and write you a post card or something every day or so, but I won’t promise. I’ll probably forget.

I’m enclosing two dollars for Daddy. Remember the time I borrowed $2.00 for the Aviation Club when each of the officers had to put up $2.00 in order to get $10 right away for the picture in the yearbook? Well, I just got mine back the other day. Mrs. Robinson brought it to me with a note. The treasurer of the Club (Tom Carter) had returned everyone’s $2.00 but mine. She asked him about it the last day of school and made him feel so ashamed that he went among his many boy friends in the club and collected enough dimes and nickels to get $2.00. Wasn’t that nice? Sorry I’m so late in returning it. I would have returned it in my own money, but I though I’d get it back eventually, by fair means or fowl!

Also there’s a check of some oil they left, I guess. I’m sending all this junk cause I think you might want to see it. You can send it all back and tell me where to put it, if you like, but I don’t know what you want to see and what you don’t! So, you’re getting it all!

The Post is still coming, but the Star isn’t. You cancelled it, didn’t you?

Those 3 prs. Of white nylon and rayon socks sound wonderful. Thanks a lots, Nannie. Did I tell you that I’m forced to wear my new loafers to work? My others split down the sides. The leather rotted from walking in the rain in them. I haven’t gotten these wet at all. I wear my boots when it rains hard and if it’s sprinkling, I wear something old, but all my shoes are uncomfortable to wear all day long, so it’ll do no good to argue about it, I’ve got to have something comfortable on my feet when I work and play shoes are far more comfortable to wear all day long.

I can’t think of anything more to tell you, but it’s taken me long enough to say this much. Seven pages is plenty for any one family, anyway. Now I’ve got to take some more time off and write Audrey a letter separately. Not because anything is secret, but I haven’t written the old girl one letter for herself and she’s written me 5, which I greatly appreciate in these days when I don’t get much mail, cause I don’t write any at all!

By now,

Love to all,

Sib

PS I expect a long letter from everyone now! SMG

30 Oct 1956

Monday nite
29 Oct 56

My darling,

I’m blue, lonely, down in the dumps and drunk. Some combination, eh! We’ve been celebrating the results of Friday’s midterm exam – I got a 91. The worst is over with only a final left to take the last Thursday of the course. Most everyone did good so we’ve been in the barracks drinking and dreaming.

So tonite I’m hard up thinking about you. Got your letters with the pictures today and every time I look at those beautiful legs of yours I nearly go crazy torturing myself thinking about it but I can’t help dreaming about it. Your so darned lovely and I’m so lonely!

And don’t you ever ask me again how I can stand “this old bag.” I married the loveliest, most wonderful girl in the world and don’t you ever forget it! Your gorgeous and I worship ever inch of you. I’ll look at your picture and drool anytime I want but I’d rather drool over you in person. You can and must be my sweater girl. Keep those tight sweaters just for me, please.

Forget the mail at Loury. The box number is 1022 but you can’t pick it up, anyhow. Its only ads anyway.

Tell that Tweetie Bird I can hardly wait to see him and Chuck and Shonny too. Only 2 weeks and 4 days to go. It won’t be long now. We expect to be home Sunday nite the 17th. Hope to be in by 8pm.
We didn’t go to Washinton, weather – but hope to go next weekend. I called Murry and told her.

Must go to bed – need some sleep before tomorrow’s class. I love you……

All my love
Hubby.

P.S. We’re going to Calif!!!

21 Aug 1944

August 21, 1944

This is in answer to your questionnaire of Auguest 17, 1944.
File #4BRO: IB:CS.

Question:

#32. High School attended – Woodrow Wilson, Nebraska Avenue and Fort Drive, N.W.; Washington 16, D.C. I completed two years of high school, sophomore and junior, during 1942-1944. I will complete my senior year and receive my diploma in June, 1945. My courses are academic.

#37. I was attending school from February, 1944 through June 23, 1944, so I held no job during that time.

#49. My residence during the part (past) five years and present is 3149 Newark Street, N.W.; Washington 8, D.C. My two nearest neighbors are:

Mrs. William H. Stringer (a roomer for two years)
3149 Newark Street, N.W.

Mr. Gordon Taylor
3219 Newark Street, N.W.

I have not been outside the continental limits of the United States since 1930.

Very truly yours,

Sibyl M. Greenleaf
(signed)

P.S. I hope my final eligibility comes through before Monday, August 28. I have resigned to go back to school at that time!

Tuesday…

This thing is dragging out. Today I went to History 3… The history of England and the British Empire. I have Dr. Gordon, the guy I had for summer school and liked so well. The course promises to be an interesting one.

The next period after hist 3, I went to hist 1 (both meet Tues, Thurs & Sat) and found out I was registered for the MWF section (must have been a mistake, but I didn’t mind now I only have one Sat class.) The teacher is the same as the T-Th-S section – Mr Bauer. He was very interesting, and I think this will be an interesting course, too.

This afternoon I went to the Eng 10 – Newswriting class. This will be a fascinating class, I think. We have to write 15 news stories this semester – in the style of newspapermen. Next Thursday we meet in the Star Bldg downtown in DC and go through the whole building on a 1 ½ hr tour. I wish you’d get me a subscription to the Christian Science Monitor. That’s one of the top three newspapers in the country, and I think I’ll be able to get mostly everything I want out of it. I’ll have to buy some papers this week. He’s given us an assignment for next Tues to cut of 15 different articles about different phases of newswriting – like feature, stories, crime, disaster, human interest, gov’t releases, weather, etc.

We pledged eleven girls tonight and I got a daughter! Almost dropped my teeth – wasn’t expecting one. Carolyn got one, too. I guess I’ll have to pay for her corsage, but I couldn’t help it. She chose me, I didn’t choose her. She’s awfully nice. Jackie went to BCC with her.

Got the Reader’s Digest today and almost dropped dead when I opened the front cover. Read the first story – the book – “Let’s Help Them Marry Young” – positively guaranteed to convince you – it convinced me. That’s a very good article if you take it seriously – which you won’t, I know. Just a suggestion, dear.

Tell Audrey Charlie and I are coming to the Wilson Homecoming Dance. Thought she’d be intrigued. I’ll be home to see you for a little while Friday before the dance, but he has to take me back to school for my class Saturday and I’ll stay there to study and finish my homework Sat afternoon, cause we’re going to Baltimore to the Yankee game Sunday.

By the way, my Eng. 10 course is 3 credits now instead of 2. It was listed wrong in the book. So I’m carrying 5 three-credit courses, making a total of 15 credits. Now that I’ve changed my history, so I have one history a day, it should decrease the load of reading I’d have had to do in one day. If things turn out the way I’ve planned and I do all my work, take notes, and read all the outside reading material I should get some good grades in Feb.

I just figured out my finances. How you can understand them. I worked it out this afternoon and then went to pledging tonight and spent $15 taking my daughter to the Hot Shoppe for dessert. We always do that. There were about 40 AED’s (Alpha Zee Deltas) at the Hot Shoppe. We had a fine time!

Hope this is legible. Its late now and I couldn’t type cause Jackie’s studying. I haven’t any assignments yet, but I’m reading the 1st chapter in my history book, anyway. I’ll send a list of my books soon.

Love,
Sibyl

P.S. I need another budget book. Do you have one? SMG

***Note: This Final page is a listing of books she (Sibyl) needed for the coming semester.  I didn't type it up.  You may enlarge it and read as you choose.

26 Oct 1956

25th Tuesday

My darling,

Received 2 more letters today – gee, it was good to hear so often – keep them coming, please!

Was surprised to hear about Barkley – sure, get them a gift. Sounds like you’ve been real busy on the yard. Bet it looks wonderful.

That “Tweetie-Bird” must be a giant – can hardly wait to see him – think he’ll recognize me when I come home? I sure hope so.

I think the Den Mother idea would be good for you. Go ahead and take it. Chuck can join next year anyway.
We have the airplane so barring bad weather will leave tomorrow for DC. Just called Mury and she will meet us at Andrews. We’re due in about 2330 hrs.

So the Blackburns were having a matinee! Say I could use a few of those too, and some evening performances too for that matter.

About the Marsh’s – its just a complete blank – no one sees them after school – no invitations – no nothing. We’ve felt real strange about it. I guess they are just a peculiar family. Anyhow they aren’t overly friendly nor are they busting themselves to invite us over to see them. So – I’d just as soon forget about them.

Hey now, what’s with this “make a baby” stuff? Lets don’t lose our heads, baby, we’ve been awfully lucky with our three and so far we can feed and clothe them but I don’t know about another one just yet. Maybe when and if a promotion comes through, huh! Course I’d love to practice with you. I think we need lots of practice since I’m getting kinda rusty in my procedures. Lack of practice you know! We’d better schedule lots of training periods before we really start making more young uns.

Incidentally, young lady, I’ll have you know that when a wife dreams about her husband making love to her – it isn’t naughty. Next to the real thing it’s the most wonderful thing possible. It shows that subconsciously as well as normally we are happily mated. Thank heaven you are sexually warm and not cold. I couldn’t stand it if you didn’t enjoy it – completely. That’s what makes our relations so wonderful – the fact that you so thoroughly enjoy and want it and give it everything you have.

You have no idea of the thrill I get seeing you lying there so contented, so warm and soft with a smile of joy on your lips that just won’t quit. I go nearly crazy here thinking about you – sometimes I wake up at night swearing that I can smell your fragrance as though you just had gotten up from our bed. At first I just dreamed about you, now I think sometimes I can even see you, like a mist, almost teasing me. 1900 miles is a long distance on a map but when I wake up, somehow, I’m almost convinced you were here. I know you were in spirit and honestly that’s all that keeps me going. I woke up this morning about 3:00am in a sweat – I had dreamed about you and it was a wonderful dream but what shook me was that I could smell the warm fragrance of your hair, your body and feel your lovely lips as though you had just kissed me. Maybe my mind is playing tricks but even so – its helped me get through the day and its been a long one. Thinking about you helps so much – UP TO A POINT – then I could scream, I want you so much. Sometimes I just have to stop even thinking about anything that’s connected with home.

Everything revolves about you – my thoughts, my hopes, my needs and desires – you share in them all Thank GOD for the partner in life I was so lucky to win.

Time I closed and went to bed. This letter is not very good, my sweet. I just can’t seem to write coherently, everything that runs through my head pertaining to us.

Just believe me, when I tell you, that disjointed as it is, I mean it all and more. I’ll have to admit I can tell you in person locked together, much better than in black and white.

Goodnight, honey, wait just a few more weeks and we’ll be together for a long time. I love you.

27 July 1944

July 27, 1944

Dear Daddy,

I haven’t a thing to tell you that’s happened since yesterday, but I thought I’d write you, anyway at your other Hotel and say hello. Your letter the other day was disgustingly short. How was the conference? I’m glad you’ll be on your way by the time you receive this. We’ll be having dinner together again. I haven’t much ambition to get dinner when there’s no one to eat with. I’ve only had dinner with Mary Jane twice. She’s been out to dinner the rest of the time and twice when she was aked out I was asked somewhere else, so it didn’t make any difference. Tonight I’d like to stay down town and see what there is to see. I didn’t tell Mary Jane, cause I haven’t seen her to talk to.

I had a music lesson last night and he couldn’t have me till 8:30, so when I got out it was very dark and he walked home with me. Poor Bernie, I think that was swell of him, considering he can hardly see a thing anyway.

I believe I’d better stop typing now, as I’m taking care of the telephone for a man’s secretary while she’s out to lunch and he just got back. This typewriter makes a lot of noise here and it might disturb him. See you Sunday…

Love,

Sibyl

Tuesday 23rd

My darling,

Tomorrow at noon we’re over the hill, or is it around the bend? Anyway we’re ½ through at noon. Yippee! It’s still fast and furious and Lt Col Thomas was right – it’s a real good course but man – the amount of material per 8 hour day is terrific. So far we’ve learned how to use over 50 different graphs and charts in addition to numerous tables in order to do the job. Still have about 40 more charts to learn. They give you 5 minutes of lecture, then you work 5 or 10 problems, then repeat the process all day long. Working conditions are real fine and so are most of the instructors and believe me this helps.

Lt Col Thomas said he had called you and that you all were fine but lonely. I told him that makes us even – we were lonely here too.

I have to go back to work Nov 26th but have to sign in the 24th. That will give us a whole week together. Speaking of time together – write Patti and find out what weekend or days they want us there. I have to start planning our 2 week “honeymoon” for January. There will be no problem in getting leave – I just need to know when we will leave. Just think 2 weeks to ourselves!!!

I approve of the Blackburns for Thanksgiving – sounds like a nice way to spend the day. I sure appreciate Ed’s help on the switch, please thank him for me.

Looks like we will definitely go to DC this weekend if the weather is good. Won’t call Mury though until Thursday. We’ll know for sure then. Hope to find out something about the future while I’m there.

I need you too, Baby. I’m so pent up inside I could bust. Need those lovely arms of yours around me (those legs would help, too!) I know what it is to hold you – at least from my side of the picture. Its not only peace and security – it’s the wonderful feeling of knowing that you want to be held and snuggled. You’ve no idea what or how a man feels when he finds a woman who returns his love. I guess maybe it’s the same to you too, but I don’t know. I do know how I feel though. Believe me, I’ll tell you all about it just as soon I can, too!

You tell Jimmie that when I get home I’m going to cut in on his time and get some of those hugs he’s been getting since I’ve been gone. I’ve got a lot of catching up to do.

Honey, I can’t hold my eyes open any longer so will stop for now. Keep those wonderful letters coming – I need them, oh so bad!

Miss you terribly, my dearest and love you, love you, love you.

Sunday, 21 Oct

My darling,
Have 3 letters to answer – ‘ain’t” it wonderful. Move over – I’ve been sick too. Came down with a touch of flu Thursday morning and struggled to class both Thursday and Friday with aches and a fever – some GI’s but not severe. Finally shook it yesterday and am in A-1 condition today. Haven’t eaten anything but coffee and ice cream since Thursday. Am going to get a meal tonite though. Tell Shonny I hope she’s better now – we were sick together.
I don’t think the final grade is released here – you either complete the course and graduate or you get sent home. It may have an effect on future jobs but not on promotions.
Hope Jimmie is ok and no ill effects from his tumble. Tell Shonny Daddy says for her to real careful when she watches Jimmie.
Thanks for Chucks picture – it looks good to me. How about sending one of you?
We may get an airplane for D.C. next weekend if the weather is good. Will call Mury Thursday nite if we are going.
Meil just heard from Millie that they are being transferred to Albuquerque as soon as he gets home. Also understand that Carl Johnson is going to Ankara, Turkey. What a break. Wish we had a deal like that. Maybe our orders will come soon.
Am lonesome as blazes, honey. Its rainy and dull here so we’ve been laying around all day but its gtting supper time so will brave the elements and go eat and to a show.
Miss you more and more all the time. Can hardly wait to get home. Thank heaven we’re almost ½ through.
Got to run now – now that I’m ok will write more often. All my love to the best there is -

I love you
